Cabin Fever NW: Music

Mary Alice

(Cabin Fever NW)

Tara Wolfe, BMI
When my great aunt Mary Alice was visiting a while back, I asked her whatever became of Uncle Ross's fiddle. The loveliest story unfolded, which I have tried to capture in song.
-Tara
In the shadow of the Rocky Mountains where the soil was hard and dry
And the winter snow fell heavy from the cold Alberta sky
Mary Alice met three brothers who worked the neighbor’s farm
Each dreamed they’d go out walkin’ with that darlin’ on their arm

CHORUS Mary Alice loved the fiddler
Loved to hear him play those songs
Loved to see the folks out dancing
And she loved to sing along

One brother played piano and the other played guitar
But the boy who played the fiddle was her favorite one by far
So they married at the harvest and they loved so faithfully
They added four strong branches to that fiddler’s family tree

CHORUS

Now that fiddle’s filled with roses, faded blossoms tucked inside
Which she laid upon his casket when she said her last goodbye
But she knows they’ll meet up yonder, make their music evermore
Trusts her prayers will all be answered, when they reach the other shore

CHORUS Mary Alice loved the fiddler
Loved to hear him play those songs
Loved to see the folks out dancing
And she loved to sing along

Mary Alice loved the fiddler
She loved his gentle laughing ways
Knew he’d pick her for his sweetheart
Knew she’d love him all her days
